Scouting at Eräkamut

Guiding and Scouting is a wonderful hobby where children and young people learn new things about nature, themselves, other people and the surrounding environment. Eräkamut is a local Scout group in Kerava, Finland. Here is what you need to know, in English.

By joining the Guides and Scouts and our local group Eräkamut (roughly “Wilderness Buddies”), you get to learn by doing instead of just reading about things in books. Guiding and Scouting is for everyone, and it is a hobby where everyone can truly make a difference.

In Scouting, children will

  • make new friends
  • participate and have an influence
  • have unforgettable camp experiences
  • gain international experiences
  • experience adventures and have fun.

How do you start Scouting?

Children can start Scouting at the age of seven, and there is no upper age limit. Children meet weekly in small groups (known as patrols) with others of the same age. The patrols are led by one or two adult Scouts. During meetings children play, do arts and crafts, and learn new skills. Every now and then we also take part in larger events.

All Scouting activities are based on the Scouts’ youth programme, which consists of numerous activities tailored to different age groups. Eräkamut focuses on hiking and outdoor activities.

This is how you can join

Fill in the membership application form, or contact us directly at . If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them.

Scouting is affordable

Scouting is one of the most affordable hobbies for children in Finland. The Scouts’ membership fee is approximately 70 euros per year. It covers the national organisation, the Uusimaa Scout District and the local group, and includes insurance during Scouting activities. In addition, Eräkamut collects a season fee of about 40 euros per child per term, which covers weekly meetings and hikes; new members also pay a one-time joining fee of 25 euros.

Small participation fees are collected for some hikes and camps. Please note that certain events require some gear, but you can take part in weekly meetings without any special equipment. Fee exemptions can be applied for, so no one should be left out because of cost.

For adults, too

You can start Scouting as an adult, and no previous experience is needed. Eräkamut and the Scouts as a whole offer plenty of activities and a wide range of volunteer roles for adults.

Family Scouting

Eräkamut also offers Family Scouting (perhepartio) for children under seven and their parents. The purpose is to familiarise children with Scouting and to give families positive nature experiences. Family Scouting is currently on a break while we look for a volunteer leader, so if you would be interested, please get in touch.

Safety

The Safely Together guideline is intended for all Scout leaders to ensure a safe environment for the growth and development of every child and young person in Scouting. Safely Together training is mandatory for all Scouts over the age of 18 and for group leaders under 18, and it must be completed again every five years.
